The European Union Prize for Literature celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2018, and it does it by organising a special edition of the prize: the writing contest “A European Story: EUPL Winners Write Europe”.
This original, one-time competition celebrates 10 years of the EUPL by asking previous EUPL winners to submit stories with a European component. It is a unique initiative to celebrate literature, Europe and the EUPL.
The EUPL Writing Contest will be judged by a professional jury and the public. The professional jury will be composed of selected personalities from the world of art and literature, whose profiles will be made available here in due course. A special prize will be also awarded by a jury composed of Members of the European Parliament. As 2018 is the year of European Year of Cultural Heritage, a special prize will be awarded to the best short fiction in which European heritage plays a significant role. The EUPL consortium has also approached the European Parliament to invite MEPs to choose their favourite short stories. In addition, the EUPL consortium will establish contacts to explore synergies with other EU prizes such as Europa Nostra.
The participating entries will be announced at the House of European History in Brussels in May 2018. The awards ceremony will take place in November 2018 in Vienna, with the patronage of the Austrian Presidency of the EU.
All along, the EUPL Consortium will create an exciting virtual journey to take readers across Europe and to celebrate the EUPL winners, as well as a physical tour, involving many of the book fairs of the ALDUS network.
