(IM) POSSIBILITIES OF POETRY TRANSLATION
Online Seminar for Translators
A conversation with Maren Kames and Marina Agathangelidou
Is it even possible to translate poetry or should we be speaking of re-writing and alteration? How much distance is one allowed or should be willing to take from the original? Does that alter our concept regarding the purpose and work of a translation? From the traditional question of “fidelity” to viewing translation as an open process, there is a longstanding and animated debate.
Elena Pallantza, herself a poetry translator from German into Greek and vice versa, meets the poet Maren Kames in a conversation with Marina Agathangelidou, who is currently working on Kame’s book LUNA LUNA and its translation into Greek. Insights into the writing and translation workshop and an exchange about form, sound and meaning using the example of German and Greek are intended to show the variety of criteria with which this complex work is approached.
The talk will be followed by a discussion.

TRANSLATING GRAPHIC NOVELS: A SPECIAL CHALLENGE
Online Seminar for Translators
Text-image interaction plays a crucial role in graphic novels and comics. For translators, this means that they will have to face some special challenges. How does one transpose their texts, mostly dialogue, within the context of the everyday culture of the target language, and this in an extremely limited space? How far can
one go from the original and how will the translation preserve the interaction between text, image and lettering in the original?
Berlin-based cartoonist, writer and artist Katharina Greve, translator Marianna Tsatsou and Lida Tsene, artistic director of the Comicdom Con Athens festival, will discuss these issues.
The talk will be followed by a discussion.
