The Goethe Institut is an institution of the Federal Republic of Germany with responsibility for promoting study of the German language abroad, encouraging cultural exchange and fostering awareness of German culture, politics and society through an extensive network of centres active all over the world.

Litrix.de began in 2003 on the initiative of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (the Federal Cultural Fund). The Goethe Institut was responsible for running the project between 2003 and 2008.
